History
How Theatr Derek Williams was named
A Building for the Community
When Ysgol Godre’r Berwyn opened its doors, the governors and headteacher were very keen to ensure that the school was used extensively by the whole community. An essential element in promoting this vision was the Theatr. With the refurbishment of the old Ysgol y Berwyn building the hall was upgraded and developed into a more welcoming and comfortable space for performers and audiences. There was an appeal for support from a number of interested parties to form a committee that would maintain and develop the Theatr.
Naming the Theatr
It was unanimously decided that the Theatr name would be called Theatr Derek Williams.
Derek was a maths teacher at Ysgol y Berwyn from 1983 to 2009 but his interest in the arts was equally active. He has written scripts and song lyrics, produced all kinds of shows and inspired generations of children and young people. He was also ons of the founders of Cwmni Theatr Maldwyn, responsible for musicals such as ‘Y Mab Darogan’, ‘Pum Diwrnod o Ryddid’ and ‘Ann!’
This name will serve as a reminder and tribute to Derek Williams’ work in the school and the area.
